Bello Turji’s associate killed in Sokoto

In a significant breakthrough in Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts, Alhaji Shaudo Alku, a senior associate of notorious bandit and terrorist leader Bello Turji, has been killed in a targeted airstrike conducted by the Nigerian military in Sokoto State.

According to military sources, the operation, executed by the Air Component of Operation Fagan Yama, took place on Saturday, May 18, 2025. According to military sources, the airstrike targeted a known terrorist hideout near Tunfa Primary School in Isa Local Government Area (LGA). The area has long been a hotspot for bandit activity and cross-border criminal operations.

Alku, who was reportedly invited from neighboring Niger Republic to attend a strategic meeting with Turji’s inner circle, was confirmed among those killed in the precision strike. Several other armed men, including yet-to-be-identified commanders, were also eliminated in the attack.

Military intelligence suggests the meeting was aimed at planning future operations and solidifying alliances between criminal factions operating in the region. The death of Alku is viewed as a significant setback to Turji’s network, which has been responsible for numerous kidnappings, killings, and attacks across northwestern Nigeria.

A senior military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said:
“This operation is part of a broader, sustained campaign to decimate terrorist leadership and infrastructure in the region. The neutralization of Shaudo Alku further weakens the operational capabilities of Bello Turji’s group.”

Local sources in Isa LGA reported hearing loud explosions on Saturday evening, followed by visible military aircraft overhead. While the Nigerian Armed Forces have not yet released a comprehensive casualty report, initial assessments indicate that the strike achieved its intended objectives with minimal collateral damage.

The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to ending terrorism and restoring security in the region. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.

Further details, including the identities of other individuals killed in the strike, are expected to be released following ongoing assessments and intelligence gathering.

Operation Fagan Yama, a joint security initiative, continues to focus on flushing out terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements operating in Sokoto, Zamfara, and parts of Niger Republic, with recent efforts showing growing success.
