Former President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun attended the North West Security and Peace Summit today. The summit, held in Katsina, convened key stakeholders including governors, traditional rulers, military officials, community leaders, and security experts to address critical security issues in the region.
IGP Egbetokun highlighted the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing efforts to combat banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, praising the bravery and professionalism of officers. He emphasized the importance of community policing, which has improved intelligence gathering and proactive interventions.
The summit showcased successful joint operations between the police and the military, such as Operation Puff Adder and Operation Hadarin Daji, which have disrupted criminal activities and enhanced regional security.
Despite these achievements, the IGP acknowledged ongoing challenges like difficult terrain and limited resources. He called for a holistic approach to security, inspired by the United Nations’ New Security Agenda.
Vice President Shettima advocated for local policing, comprehensive police reform, and better Standard Operating Procedures for security forces. He stressed the need for enhanced collaboration among security agencies and assured Nigerians of improved security, particularly in the North West.
The summit aimed to formulate strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens in the region, with the IGP expressing confidence in achieving a more peaceful and secure North West.
