Nigeria activates national cholera emergency response amid rising cases

As of June 24, 2024, Nigeria has reported a total of 1528 suspected cases of cholera and 53 deaths spread across 31 states. In response to the escalating situation, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated the National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). This move comes following a dynamic risk assessment that highlighted the country’s vulnerability to increased cholera transmission.

The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is tasked with coordinating a robust national response, particularly in the affected states, aimed at interrupting disease transmission and mitigating the socio-economic impacts associated with cholera outbreaks. The EOC will work to enhance surveillance, strengthen case management, and ensure the availability of essential medical supplies and resources in affected areas.

Cholera, a waterborne disease, can spread rapidly in communities with inadequate sanitation and safe water access, exacerbating the risk of outbreaks. The activation of the EOC underscores the government’s proactive approach to addressing public health emergencies and underscores the urgency of implementing comprehensive interventions to curb the spread of the disease.

Authorities urge the public to maintain strict adherence to hygiene measures, such as proper handwashing and safe drinking water practices, to reduce the risk of cholera transmission. The NCDC continues to collaborate closely with state health authorities and international partners to monitor the situation closely and deploy necessary interventions effectively.

The activation of the National Cholera EOC underscores Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring a coordinated and effective response to mitigate the impact of cholera outbreaks and safeguard public health across the nation.
