Cardoso assumes duty as acting CBN governor

Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, officially assumed the role of acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday, September 22, 2023. This appointment is pending confirmation by the Senate and comes following the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as CBN Governor. Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, the Director of Corporate Communications, conveyed this information through a statement.

The Deputy Governors-Designate have also taken on their roles in acting capacities, following the formal resignation of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora as Deputy Governors of the CBN. Dr. Cardoso and his fellow appointees took their oaths of office during a brief ceremony held at the CBN’s Head Office in Abuja on Friday, September 2023. They have since begun their responsibilities of overseeing monetary and financial sector policies for the Federal Government.

Dr. Cardoso, an accomplished Economic and Development Policy Advisor, Financial Sector Leader, former Chairman of Citi Nigeria, and former Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos, brings more than three decades of managerial experience to his new role. He is an alumnus of Aston University in Birmingham, United Kingdom, where he pursued studies in managerial and administrative studies. Additionally, he holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States of America.

It’s worth noting that Dr. Cardoso and his colleagues were appointed to their respective positions at the Bank on September 15, 2023, with their appointments awaiting confirmation by the Senate.
