CoAS hosts interfaith fast-breaking, praises troops’ sacrifices

The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has commended troops of the Nigerian Army for their bravery, resilience and unwavering commitment in ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other security threats across the country.

According to Acting Director Army Public Relations Col. Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief gave the commendation on Saturday during a combined interfaith breaking of fast he hosted for soldiers serving within Abuja at the TA Lagbaja Banquet Hall, Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Asokoro.

During the event, the COAS paid tribute to frontline troops deployed across the North-East, North-West, North-Central and other operational theatres, acknowledging their sacrifices and steadfast commitment to safeguarding the nation.

Shaibu noted that the coinciding sacred seasons of Ramadan and Lent offer profound reminders of sacrifice, patience, discipline and compassion—virtues that closely reflect the professional ethos of the Nigerian soldier. He observed that many personnel observing the holy periods continue to perform their duties in challenging operational environments, demonstrating exceptional dedication and patriotism.

The Army Chief emphasised the importance of leadership by example and sound administration as central pillars of his command philosophy, which prioritises troop welfare, the well-being of soldiers’ families and the morale and readiness of personnel.

He urged troops to maintain the strong bonds of comradeship and the warrior ethos that define them as a professional fighting force, encouraging them to remain steadfast in the face of prevailing security challenges.

Shaibu also called on soldiers to support one another and to remember and pray for fallen comrades who paid the ultimate price in the defence of the nation.

Reaffirming his vision for the Nigerian Army, the COAS reiterated his commitment to transforming the force into a more professional, adaptable and combat-ready institution capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency operational environment.

He stressed that strengthening training standards, discipline and operational readiness remains essential to achieving lasting success in ongoing military operations.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Chief of Administration (Army), Isa Abdullahi, described the gathering as a strong symbol of unity, mutual respect and shared purpose among soldiers of different faiths serving under one flag.

He noted that the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent reflects enduring values of sacrifice, discipline, reflection and compassion—principles that align closely with the demands of military service.

Abdullahi added that the interfaith breaking of fast goes beyond ceremony, as it strengthens fellowship and solidarity among troops regardless of background or belief.

He also commended soldiers deployed across various theatres of operation for their vigilance and dedication, noting that their commitment reflects the spirit of endurance and selfless service required both in military duty and spiritual devotion.
