COP29: CSOs urge industrialized Nations to pay climate and ecological debts

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have urged industrialized nations to take responsibility for the environmental and climate crises by paying climate and ecological debts estimated at $5-$8 trillion annually. Speaking at a media briefing on COP29’s outcomes, they emphasized that these payments are debts owed to humanity, not acts of charity.

Mr. Nnimmo Bassey, Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), criticized COP29’s failure to adequately address climate finance, noting that the pledged $300 billion—effective in 2035—falls short of what is needed. “The figures were rushed through at the last minute, disappointing many,” he said. He also expressed concerns that even this amount may rely on loans, deepening the debt of vulnerable nations.

Bassey highlighted the disparity between promises and actions, referencing the unfulfilled $100 billion annual pledge from COP15. He called for redirecting military expenditures and halting fossil fuel subsidies to generate necessary funds, stating, “The issue is not a lack of cash but misplaced priorities.”

The CSOs also decried the influence of fossil fuel lobbyists at COP29, which saw over 1,770 representatives, outnumbering delegates from the 10 most vulnerable nations. They warned against reliance on carbon markets and other “false solutions” that perpetuate climate injustice.

The groups called for community-led solutions, the recognition of climate champions who preserve fossil reserves, and investment in renewable energy. They demanded an end to geoengineering experiments and urged for inclusive, rights-based transitions.

Looking ahead, the CSOs stressed that COP30 must prioritize the voices of youth, women, and indigenous communities. They called for decisive action on loss and damage, rejecting the commodification of nature, and massive investment in just transitions to address climate and social inequities.
