The Cuban Embassy in Nigeria has held a commemorative event in honour of Fidel Castro, nine years after the death of the former Cuban leader, reflecting on his enduring influence on global struggles for justice.
Speaking at the gathering in Abuja, Ambassador Miriam Morales Palmero paid tribute to Castro’s legacy before an audience of diplomats, government officials and members of Nigeria’s Cuba-friendship community. She said the annual remembrance remains deeply significant to the Cuban people and offers a moment to reaffirm the principles Castro championed throughout his life.
Ambassador Morales Palmero thanked attendees for what she described as a strong demonstration of the historic friendship between Cuba and Nigeria, noting that the solidarity between both nations “remains a living and unbreakable link.”
She described Castro as more than a political figure, portraying him as a global moral voice whose commitment to defending the disadvantaged and speaking against oppression transcended national boundaries. “His life was defined by dedication to just causes,” she said, adding that his influence extends to all who aspire to build a more equitable world.

The envoy also highlighted Castro’s longstanding connection to Africa, recalling his admiration for African nations and the solidarity he shared with liberation movements and leaders across the continent. She said Castro regarded Africa as a partner and a source of inspiration.
Although Castro died in 2016, Ambassador Morales Palmero stressed that his ideals and unwavering commitment to justice continue to resonate. “Fidel did not disappear,” she told the audience. “His example endures.”
The event featured a screening of the documentary Fidel is Fidel, showcasing key moments from Castro’s life and leadership. Organisers said the film was selected to highlight the discipline, conviction and humanity that guided his decades of public service.
The evening concluded with renewed expressions of friendship between Cuba and Nigeria, reaffirming shared commitments to solidarity and cooperation—values central to Castro’s worldview.
