Customs Comptroller-General warns against firearm misuse

The Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has instructed Officers and Men of the Service to exercise caution when dealing with citizens and to resort to the use of firearms only in extreme self-defense situations. He delivered this message during the official declaration of a sensitization workshop on the practical implementation of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 for Comptrollers and Assistant Legal Advisers at the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College Gwagwalada, Abuja on July 27, 2023.

Emphasizing the need for restraint, he stated that firearms should not be used unless there is an absolute necessity. He reminded them that their primary duty is to protect the citizens of the country.

The Comptroller-General has consistently prioritized the protection of citizens and the enhancement of the Service’s efficiency by promoting trade facilitation, staff welfare, and suppressing smuggling. He emphasized that the core mandate of the Service is to safeguard the lives and properties of Nigerians, with integrity and fairness as its guiding principles.

Regarding the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, the Acting Comptroller-General highlighted its potential to improve the proficiency of the Service. He urged the Officers to pay close attention to the training and fully comprehend the significance of the legal framework provided for the Service. He stressed the importance of operating within the boundaries of the law.

While the new law empowers the Nigeria Customs Service with substantial authority to enforce sanctions against Customs law violators, the Comptroller-General emphasized the need for strategic and responsible implementation. He advocated for creating a conducive environment for trade facilitation and fostering friendly business and Port environments.
