Customs delegation offers support to family of rice sale stampede victims

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has extended a compassionate hand to the family of Susan Odulaja, one of the victims of the tragic stampede that marred the sale of 25kg bags of rice in Lagos on February 23, 2024.

Led by the Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs/Zonal Coordinator Zone “A,” Hammi Swomen, a delegation from the NCS visited the Odulaja family in Jibowu, Lagos State, on Friday, April 26, 2024.

Expressing heartfelt condolences during the visit, ACG Swomen conveyed the NCS’s deep sympathies, stating, “We recall the unfortunate incident that resulted in the loss of four precious lives during the sale of 25kg bags of rice at a discounted price of N10,000. We are here to extend our support to this grieving family and affirm our commitment to their welfare.”

This outreach signifies the NCS’s second engagement with the Odulaja family, underscoring the service’s dedication to demonstrating empathy and solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.

Addressing Michael Odulaja, the widower, ACG Swomen assured ongoing assistance from the NCS. “The service is cognizant of the impact of this loss, and we have pledged to collaborate with this family and offer continuous support. Having a support system in times of grief alleviates the burden. Currently, we will report back to the CGC, and the service is actively considering future actions,” he affirmed.

In response, Odulaja expressed gratitude towards the representatives of the NCS for their visit and support. “I am thankful to God and the Nigeria Customs Service for their assistance. I will ensure that any support provided is utilized prudently and invested in the welfare of my children,” he remarked.

Following the unfortunate incident on February 26, 2024, the NCS issued a press statement vowing to engage with the families of the stampede victims. The statement reiterated the service’s solidarity with the affected families and its commitment to providing unwavering support, including direct engagement with the victims’ families through collaboration with hospital authorities.

The visit by the NCS delegation underscores the organization’s dedication to compassionately addressing the aftermath of the stampede and implementing support measures for affected families, reaffirming its commitment to societal welfare beyond its regulatory mandate.
