With a dedicated fund of 1.19 million Danish Krone (equivalent to approximately N2.4 billion), Denmark, in collaboration with key partners, is taking decisive steps to address the root causes of piracy and maritime crime in the Niger Delta region. The initiative marks a significant effort towards fostering stability and security in one of Africa’s critical maritime zones.
The first project, spearheaded by Academic Associate Peace Works, is centered on “Advancing Community Capacity to Mitigate Climate Change Impacts and Develop Green and Blue Economy.” Meanwhile, the second project, led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), aims to enhance and fortify the Niger Delta peace architecture through community-based crime prevention strategies.
The launch of these projects witnessed the presence of the Danish Ambassador, accompanied by esteemed colleagues from Team Europe, including representatives from the EU delegation, Finland, Germany, and the UNODC country representative. Their visit to Bayelsa State not only marked the inauguration of the projects but also highlighted the broader #TeamEurope initiative.
Upon their arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by the Governor of Bayelsa State, and engaged in discussions on regional security matters with governors and representatives from neighboring states within the Niger Delta. This platform facilitated an exchange of insights and strategies to tackle prevalent security challenges in the region.
Furthermore, the visit provided an invaluable opportunity for the delegation to interact directly with communities profoundly impacted by crime, violence, and declining livelihoods. The engagement with community members, particularly women and youth, offered a deeper understanding of the challenges faced at the grassroots level.
The delegation departed Bayelsa State deeply inspired and enriched by the constructive dialogue and feedback received from the community. The collaborative efforts between Denmark, its partners, and local stakeholders underscore a commitment to fostering sustainable peace and development in the Niger Delta region.
