The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has introduced a new policy and regulations aimed at enhancing industrial energy efficiency and reducing energy costs for industrial consumers in Nigeria.
The announcement was made during an event in Abuja, where stakeholders validated recommendations from the analysis of Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE), Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP), and innovative approaches to improving enterprise performance in Nigeria.
Abdullahi Mustapha, Director General of ECN, stated that the policy responds to growing demands from Nigerians for lower electricity costs. He emphasized the importance of energy efficiency in maximizing the benefits of electricity generation.
“Today, we are unveiling new registration and policy guidelines for industrial players to enable more efficient electricity use, which will lead to reduced costs. Our mandate as a commission is to strategically coordinate and develop energy policies across all sectors,” Mustapha said.
He highlighted that energy generation alone is insufficient without efficient utilization. “Even if we generate 20,000 megawatts, it would be wasted without proper efficiency measures,” he added.
The policy was developed with technical support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Michael Olufemi, representing the Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), commended the ECN’s initiative, describing it as a timely and strategic step toward sustainable economic growth and environmental protection in Nigeria.
