The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake, has commended the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshal for its unwavering commitment and effectiveness in tackling illegal mining activities across the country. He urged the Mining Marshal to remain resolute and continue its strategic enforcement efforts to curb illegal mining operations.
Dr. Alake delivered this message in celebration of the first anniversary of the commissioning of the Special Squad. He congratulated the NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, for the remarkable progress made over the past year, particularly in the number of arrests, the dislodgement of illegal mining sites, and the overall protection of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
The Minister praised the tactical efficiency of the NSCDC in executing its mandate, highlighting the integrity and professionalism demonstrated by the Mining Marshal Commander, ACC John Onoja.

He noted that Onoja’s consistent rejection of substantial bribes from illegal miners attempting to evade accountability underscores the credibility and dedication of the NSCDC. This, he said, aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“The Mining Marshal Commander and his team have consistently upheld the reputation of the NSCDC by refusing to compromise their integrity,” Alake stated. “Their commitment has safeguarded the mining sector and saved the country billions of dollars in potential revenue losses.”
He further urged the Mining Marshal to remain steadfast in its mission to eliminate illegal mining operations nationwide. Dr. Alake emphasized the need for continued vigilance and strategic action as the federal government intensifies efforts to protect the mining sector from criminal exploitation.
Launched on March 21, 2024, the NSCDC Mining Marshal is a specialized unit established to combat illegal mining activities, protect legitimate mining sites, and promote the sustainability of the mining sector. The unit works in close collaboration with the Ministry of Solid Minerals and other relevant agencies to achieve these objectives.
