The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin, describing it as an assault on democratic order.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Abuja office, the regional bloc said it received “with consternation” reports of an effort by some military elements to overthrow the government.
“ECOWAS strongly condemns this unconstitutional move that represents a subversion of the will of the people of Benin,” the statement said.
The organisation called for full respect for Benin’s constitution and commended the government and the Republican Army for swiftly bringing the situation under control.
It warned that the leaders of the plot would be held “individually and collectively responsible” for any loss of life or property resulting from their actions.
ECOWAS added that it would support the Beninese government and people “in all forms necessary,” including the possible deployment of the regional standby force to defend the country’s constitution and territorial integrity.
