The Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS, has reaffirmed its commitment to regional justice, human rights, and the rule of law through a comprehensive update of its judicial performance since its establishment in 2001.
According to official statistics released by the Court, a total of 748 cases have been filed before it as of July 2025. Out of these, 487 judgments and 147 rulings have been delivered. Over the 24-year period, the Court has also convened 1,633 sessions, issued 66 orders, considered 61 applications for revision, delivered 43 decisions on revisions, and rendered eight advisory opinions.
From January to July 2025 alone, the Court registered 34 new cases, delivered 42 judgments, and issued three rulings during 79 court sessions. At present, 112 cases remain pending. Within this same period, four orders were issued, and one decision was rendered on a revision application. No new advisory opinions or revision requests were recorded.
The Court’s judgments continue to shape legal landscapes across the region. By holding Member States accountable and upholding the rights of individuals and communities, it has played a transformative role in promoting democratic governance, legal reform, and institutional accountability within ECOWAS.
Under the leadership of Honourable President Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves, the Court remains a central pillar in advancing justice and the rule of law throughout the sub-region.
Although currently on its annual judicial recess, the ECOWAS Court remains open to receiving and registering new cases. Full judicial proceedings are scheduled to resume in September 2025.
