The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has urged Nigerian protesters to accept President Bola Tinubu’s appeal for dialogue. In a statement released on Tuesday, ECOWAS expressed concern over the ongoing protests in Nigeria, noting reports of violence, the deaths of protesters, and the destruction of public and private properties.
The Commission extended condolences to the affected families and expressed sympathy with the Nigerian government and people. It emphasized the importance of the right to peaceful protest, as guaranteed by the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
ECOWAS welcomed President Tinubu’s State of the Nation address on August 4, 2024, and called on protesters and stakeholders to engage in inclusive dialogue to resolve grievances and maintain peace and security in Nigeria and the broader ECOWAS region.
