LCBC Executive Secretary urges continued EU and AU support in anti-terrorism efforts

The Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and Head of Mission for the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Ambassador Mamman Nuhu, has appealed to the European Union (EU), African Union (AU), and other strategic partners to maintain their crucial support in combating Boko Haram terrorism.

According to Chief Military Information Officer HQ MNJTF N’djamena Chad Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, this call was made during the opening ceremony of the 14th Joint Steering Committee Meeting on August 6, 2024, at the Radisson Hotel in N’Djamena, Chad.

Ambassador Nuhu emphasized the necessity of sustained collaboration to eradicate Boko Haram and reduce its adverse effects in the region. He acknowledged the significant contributions and sacrifices of the Troop-contributing countries (TCCs) and the continuous support from strategic partners, which have been pivotal in fostering a safer environment conducive to peace and development.

Dr. Sarjoh Bah, the AU’s Director of Conflict Management, expressed gratitude for the EU and other partners’ support in the fight against terrorism. He noted that the success of Operation LAKE SANITY II showcased the dedication and sacrifices of the MNJTF TCCs in defeating Boko Haram and restoring stability.

Dr. Bah reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to strengthening the MNJTF’s operational capacity in line with the AU Compliance and Accountability Framework, ensuring adherence to international humanitarian and human rights laws.

MNJTF Force Commander Major General Ibrahim Ali highlighted the importance of unified efforts to promote peace and stability in the Lake Chad region. He stressed that the meeting serves as a vital forum for coordinating collective actions and exchanging insights per the Support Implementation Agreement between the AU, LCBC, and MNJTF TCCs. Major General Ali affirmed that the support from the AU and its strategic partners has been instrumental in fulfilling the MNJTF’s mission of restoring peace and development.

The first day of the meeting featured updates on the overall situation in the MNJTF’s operational area, briefings on direct and additional support, an AU update on additional support to the MNJTF, a review of the Joint Steering Committee’s terms of reference, and a briefing on compliance and accountability for MNJTF operations.
