- Demands unconditional release of 10 PDP chieftains detained in Abuja secret locations
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has raised concerns about a looming crisis ahead of the upcoming governorship election, alleging collusion between elements within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigeria Police Force to target and intimidate members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement he personally signed, Governor Obaseki claimed that over the past few weeks, the police, influenced by the APC, have arrested at least 10 PDP chieftains perceived as political threats, including the serving Chairman of Esan West Local Government Area, Hon. Collins Aigbogun, who was whisked away to Abuja.
Governor Obaseki criticized the arrest and transfer of PDP leaders outside of Edo State, describing the actions as undermining his authority as the Chief Security Officer of the state. He also alleged that a rogue police team has been tasked with detaining a long list of PDP chieftains until after the election, despite appeals and petitions to the Inspector-General of Police going unheeded.
He demanded the immediate and unconditional release of those detained, calling for any legal proceedings to occur within Edo State. Obaseki expressed concerns that the APC and its allies are not committed to a peaceful and credible election, and warned of potential unrest if these actions continue unchecked.
The governor urged the Presidency and international bodies, including the American Embassy, the British High Commission, and the European Union, to monitor the situation closely and hold accountable those responsible for undermining the electoral process. He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to act swiftly to ensure a free, fair, and credible election in Edo State, preventing the state from descending into chaos.
