The United States Embassy has called on all stakeholders involved in the recently concluded Edo State gubernatorial election to uphold electoral procedures and respect legal avenues for challenging the results.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., the embassy commended the peaceful conduct of the election held on September 21. “The U.S. Mission in Nigeria applauds the people of Edo State for the largely peaceful elections and reiterates the call for calm following the results announcement,” the statement read.
Ambassador Mills also praised Governor Godwin Obaseki’s appeal for peace and urged all stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to adhere to the established processes for addressing electoral grievances.
“Transparency and due process are vital for sustaining public confidence in any democratic system,” the statement emphasized.
The U.S. government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria, pledging to closely monitor developments in Edo State.
