The Edo State Government has intensified surveillance and security operations across major highways and communities following the circulation of a viral video in which a self-acclaimed bandit threatened residents around Ekpoma and neighbouring communities in Edo Central Senatorial District.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, Governor Monday Okpebholo has been fully briefed on the development and immediately convened a high-level security meeting to address the concerns raised.
The statement noted that since assuming office, Governor Okpebholo has prioritised security and has consistently taken proactive measures to counter emerging threats. In recent weeks, he has held several strategic security briefings and activated a comprehensive surveillance architecture covering major corridors, including the Benin–Auchi Expressway, Ekpoma–Uromi Road, Ehor–Iruekpen axis, Benin Bypass, Ewu–Irrua–Ubiaja route, and the Benin–Afuze–Auchi corridor.
Following his latest directive, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilante groups, and the Edo State Special Security Squad have intensified operations across forested areas, boundary communities, and known flashpoints. These operations include search-and-comb missions, expanded patrols, and strengthened intelligence gathering aimed at denying criminal elements any foothold in the State.
The government disclosed that notable breakthroughs have already been achieved, with arrests made in connection with recent security breaches and multiple investigative leads currently being pursued.
It reaffirmed that the ongoing operations will continue until all parts of the State—urban centres, rural communities, and transit routes—are fully secured for residents, travellers, and investors.
Citizens were urged to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies, while avoiding misinformation and unverified social media content that may fuel panic.
Governor Okpebholo, the statement stressed, remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and will continue to deploy all lawful measures to ensure criminals find no safe haven in Edo State.
