In a recent operation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) apprehended 11 individuals suspected of currency racketeering and internet fraud in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The arrests, carried out on November 11, 2024, by operatives of the EFCC’s Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate, targeted suspects allegedly involved in naira abuse and online fraud activities.
The operation took place around Apara Street in the New Government Reservation Area (GRA) of Port Harcourt, following what the EFCC described as “credible intelligence” regarding the suspects’ activities. The individuals arrested include Rafael Obi, John Daniel, Dominion Sambo, Solomon Nwoke, Solomon Daniel, Stanley Uche, Michael Markson, Chima Fred Onwra, Arinze Damian, Vizor Richard, and Chidera Orji.
According to EFCC officials, the operation led to the recovery of N1,485,000 in cash, five luxury vehicles, several smartphones, and various documents allegedly linked to illegal activities. These items are believed to serve as evidence of currency racketeering and cybercrime, further substantiating the case against the suspects.
An EFCC spokesperson stated that the suspects will face legal action once the investigations are concluded. The operation forms part of a broader effort by the EFCC to curb financial crimes and protect the integrity of the naira, as well as to crack down on online fraud activities impacting both local and international communities.
The EFCC has ramped up similar crackdowns in recent months, emphasizing the importance of intelligence-based investigations to identify and dismantle organized financial crimes. The commission is urging citizens to report suspicious activities, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s financial system.
