The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, a self-proclaimed fertility nurse, before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar at the Federal High Court in Independence Layout, Enugu. David-Agwa faces 45-count charges of fraudulent impersonation, forgery, and obtaining money under false pretences, amounting to N28.2 million.
One of the charges stated that in 2024, David-Agwa obtained N1.6 million from Okenwa Joy Chiamaka by falsely claiming to be a fertility nurse trained to assist women in conceiving, an offence under the Advance Fee Fraud Act. Another charge highlighted a fraudulent transaction of N1.25 million with Amarachi Okpala.
David-Agwa pleaded not guilty to all charges. EFCC counsel Blessing N. Obasi requested a trial date and the defendant’s remand at Enugu State Correctional Facility. The defense, led by G.C. Madubuegwu, sought bail for the defendant, citing provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. The EFCC opposed the bail application, stressing the emotional impact on victims.
Justice Umar adjourned the case to November 12, 2024, for a ruling on the bail application, with David-Agwa remanded in custody. The case began when the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) handed David-Agwa over to the EFCC after discovering she had posed as a fertility nurse, defrauding over 45 women using forged certificates from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
