EFCC arrests 10 suspects over illegal mining in Kwara

Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 10 suspects over alleged illegal mining activities along the Ilorin–Ogbomosho axis in Kwara State.

The suspects were apprehended on Sunday, February 1, 2026, following credible intelligence on unlawful mineral excavation and transportation across parts of Kwara and Oyo states. The operation was carried out through a coordinated sting by EFCC officers.

Those arrested include nine truck drivers and one escort, who were intercepted while conveying solid minerals suspected to have been illegally mined. Recovered items include trucks loaded with lithium, tin and lepidolite.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects lacked the requisite licences, permits and regulatory approvals required for mining and transportation of solid minerals.

The EFCC said investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be charged to court upon their conclusion.
