EFCC arrests 22 suspected internet fraudsters in Benin City

In a coordinated operation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 22 individuals suspected of involvement in internet fraud across Benin City. The arrests, which took place on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, were carried out by operatives of the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate based on actionable intelligence regarding the suspects’ activities.

The EFCC, in a statement, revealed that the operation targeted various locations within the city where the suspects were believed to be operating. The arrests are part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to combat the rising tide of cybercrime, which has become a significant concern both locally and internationally.

Among the items seized during the operation were 10 exotic cars, multiple laptops, and an assortment of mobile phones. These items, according to EFCC officials, are believed to have been used by the suspects to perpetrate their fraudulent schemes. The Commission noted that the recovery of these assets is crucial in disrupting the suspects’ operations and serves as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities.

The EFCC stated that the arrests were made possible through a combination of surveillance, intelligence gathering, and swift action by the operatives. The suspects, who are all in custody, are currently undergoing further interrogation as part of the investigation. The Commission emphasized that all individuals involved in internet-related fraud would face the full wrath of the law.

Speaking on the arrests, the spokesperson for the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate highlighted the Commission’s unwavering commitment to eradicating cybercrime in the region. “The fight against internet fraud is a top priority for the EFCC, and we will continue to pursue those who engage in these illicit activities. Our operatives are working tirelessly to ensure that cybercriminals are brought to justice,” the spokesperson said.

The EFCC also assured the public that due process will be followed in handling the cases of the arrested individuals. The suspects are expected to be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded, with the EFCC working to compile all necessary evidence to ensure successful prosecutions.

This operation is part of a broader crackdown on internet fraudsters, often referred to as “Yahoo boys,” who have been operating across Nigeria. The EFCC has ramped up its efforts in recent months, conducting multiple raids and making significant arrests in various states. The Commission has called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to cybercrime.

The EFCC reiterated its dedication to protecting Nigeria’s image and ensuring that those who tarnish the country’s reputation through fraudulent activities are held accountable. The Commission also appealed to young Nigerians to steer clear of internet fraud, warning that the consequences of such actions are severe and far-reaching.

As the investigation continues, the EFCC remains focused on disrupting the networks of cybercriminals and ensuring that justice is served.
