EFCC, JTF arrest 115 suspected currency racketeers in Enugu

Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in collaboration with a Joint Task Force comprising units from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Customs Service, conducted a successful operation on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, resulting in the apprehension of 115 individuals suspected of involvement in currency racketeering within Enugu State.

The operation, executed along Owerri Road, Ogui, Enugu State, was prompted by actionable intelligence indicating illicit foreign exchange activities perpetrated by certain bureau de change operators, currency speculators, and street vendors.

Among those detained were 113 males and 2 females. Seized during the operation were significant sums of currency, including N110,700,000.00 (One Hundred and Ten Million, Seven Hundred Thousand Naira), $8,368.00 (Eight Thousand, Three Hundred and Sixty-Eight United States Dollars), £145.00 (One Hundred and Forty-Five Pounds), €2,725.00 (Two Thousand, Seven Hundred and Twenty-Five Euros), 900 South African Rands, 32,000.00 CFA, 100 Turkiya, and 500 Bank Mozambique currencies, encompassing various denominations. Additionally, a safe, believed to be abandoned by one of the street vendors, was recovered.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a portion of the suspects hails from Niger Republic, suggesting potential cross-border implications. Legal proceedings are imminent as the apprehended individuals will be brought before the appropriate judicial authorities to face charges in accordance with the law.
