EFCC nabs 120 suspected internet fraudsters in Lagos

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 120 suspected internet fraudsters in a sweeping operation conducted by operatives of its Lagos Zonal Directorate 1.

The suspects, comprising 95 males and 25 females, were apprehended at multiple locations across Lagos following credible intelligence reports and a period of sustained surveillance. According to the EFCC, the operation was meticulously planned to dismantle networks allegedly involved in various forms of cybercrime, including identity theft, romance scams, phishing, and online financial fraud.

A statement from the Commission disclosed that the operation yielded significant recoveries. Items seized from the suspects include 26 exotic vehicles, expensive jewelry, high-end smartphones, dozens of laptops, and several documents containing evidence of fraudulent activities. Some of the items recovered are believed to have been purchased with proceeds from illicit online operations.

“The arrests are part of our ongoing efforts to rid the nation of cybercriminals who are tarnishing Nigeria’s image globally,” an EFCC official stated. “The operation is a clear message that the Commission remains committed to the fight against internet fraud and other related financial crimes.”

The EFCC noted that all suspects are currently in custody and undergoing thorough profiling and interrogation. Upon the conclusion of investigations, they will be charged to court to face prosecution in accordance with Nigeria’s cybercrime and financial laws.

The Commission also reiterated its call to the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious financial activities, emphasizing the importance of collective effort in combating cybercrime in the country.

This large-scale arrest underscores the EFCC’s increasing use of intelligence-driven operations in addressing the growing threat of online fraud, especially among the youth demographic in urban centers like Lagos.
