EFCC, NCC parley to combat internet fraud

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the imperative for a comprehensive collaborative effort and synergy between the Commission and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in addressing the pervasive issue of internet fraud nationwide. This call was made during a meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, where Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, paid a courtesy visit to the EFCC’s corporate headquarters.

Olukoyede underscored the increasingly prevalent exploitation of the internet by fraudsters as a means to perpetrate criminal activities. He urged the NCC to bolster its regulatory endeavors to effectively counter these illicit actions. Emphasizing the significance of collaborative enforcement and regulatory efforts, he stated, “When law enforcement and regulatory agencies collaborate, it disrupts the status quo. Given that crimes are often driven by technology, collaboration is imperative.”

Highlighting the joint commitment of both agencies to combat internet fraud, Olukoyede assured that perpetrators would face heightened scrutiny and deterrence. He reiterated the belief that the nation’s challenges are surmountable and urged greater dedication to fostering a corruption-free society. He urged the NCC and internet service providers to enhance monitoring mechanisms to curb fraudulent activities online, asserting that with stakeholders’ support and cooperation, the EFCC would effectively discharge its mandate.

In response, Dr. Maida expressed his purpose for the visit, stating that it aimed to extend congratulations to the EFCC Chairman on his appointment and reinforce the enduring partnership between the NCC and EFCC in combating internet fraud. He emphasized the significance of the EFCC’s role in facilitating the forensic training of NCC personnel, underscoring the vital interrelationship between the two agencies in addressing internet-related crimes.

Acknowledging the sophisticated nature of internet crimes, Maida affirmed the NCC’s unwavering commitment to collaborating with the EFCC across various domains to advance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He reaffirmed the NCC’s readiness to engage with the EFCC comprehensively to combat internet fraud and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
