In a concerted effort to address the pervasive issue of illegal oil bunkering across the nation, the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has sought collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This collaborative initiative was formalized during a courtesy visit led by NUPENG’s President, Comrade William Akporeha, and members of the executive to the corporate headquarters of the Commission in Jabi, Abuja, on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.
During the meeting, Akporeha commended the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Ola Olukoyede, for his steadfast commitment to repositioning the anti-graft agency towards professionalism and adherence to the rule of law. He emphasized the importance of partnership between NUPENG and EFCC in cleansing the oil and gas industry of illicit activities.
“I commend your administration for its transformative approach. There’s now a perception shift towards EFCC, where due process is upheld. This instills confidence in legitimate businesses, fostering prosperity in our nation. I pledge NUPENG’s unwavering collaboration with EFCC,” remarked Akporeha.
Highlighting the challenges faced by petroleum product transporters nationwide, Akporeha appealed to EFCC to intervene whenever truck drivers encounter difficulties in the discharge of their duties.
In response, Olukoyede underscored the significance of concerted efforts by major stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to tackle the prevalent economic sabotage plaguing the industry.
“Collaborative efforts are imperative in our collective fight against corruption, a menace hindering our nation’s progress. As we join forces, we must collectively combat the hurdles obstructing our advancement. Let it be known that EFCC stands firm against any form of malpractice, and we welcome your partnership in upholding integrity,” affirmed Olukoyede.
Furthermore, Olukoyede assured NUPENG members that EFCC would refrain from arbitrarily arresting or detaining truck drivers not involved in illicit activities. He stressed the Commission’s commitment to working closely with all stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to ensure transparency and accountability.
“The EFCC remains dedicated to fostering a culture of integrity in the sector. We will continue collaborating with stakeholders to maintain order and eradicate corruption,” assured Olukoyede.
This alliance between EFCC and NUPENG signals a proactive step towards curbing illicit practices in the oil and gas industry, fostering a conducive environment for legitimate business operations in Nigeria.
