EFCC, NCS pledge to fight illegal mining in Oyo, Osun

The Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Oyo State Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service have pledged to collaborate closely in addressing the issue of illegal mining within the State. This commitment was solidified on Thursday, August 17, 2023, during a courtesy visit by the Acting Zonal Commander of the EFCC in Ibadan, ACE I Halima Mustafa Rufa’u, to the Oyo/Osun State Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Babajide Jaiyeoba.

Rufa’u, expressing her appreciation for the warm reception she received, voiced concern about the detrimental impact of illegal solid mineral operations in the region on the national economy. She highlighted the potential of these natural resources to drive development, improve healthcare facilities, alleviate poverty, and enhance the educational system. However, she lamented that unscrupulous individuals were exploiting these resources for their personal gain, undermining the nation’s progress.

Undeterred by the manipulative tactics of those profiting from illegal mining, Rufa’u emphasized the EFCC’s commitment to enforcing existing laws against such activities. She stressed the need for a robust partnership and collaboration between the EFCC and the Nigeria Customs Service.

Comptroller Babajide Jaiyeoba, in response, conveyed his gratitude for the visit and commended the EFCC for its pivotal role in combatting not only illegal mining but also cybercrime within the State. He expressed confidence in the capabilities of both organizations to effectively confront this challenge head-on.

The Comptroller recognized the timely nature of the visit, coinciding with an upsurge in illegal mining activities within the State. He assured that with the united determination of both agencies, victory against these illicit activities was assured. He affirmed their readiness and willingness to cooperate closely in combating the menace.

The Ibadan Zonal Command of the EFCC and the Oyo State Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service have jointly committed to confronting the issue of illegal mining. This collaboration, as affirmed during the visit, signifies their determination to enforce laws, curb unlawful practices, and ensure the responsible and sustainable utilization of the State’s natural resources for the greater benefit of the nation.
