EFCC, South Africa’s Priority Crime Investigation Directorate reaffirm commitment to combat economic crimes

The Acting-Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulkarim Chukkol has reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to collaborating with other law enforcement agencies in Africa to combat cybercrime, money laundering, and other economic and financial crimes.

Chukkol made these statements during a visit to the EFCC Headquarters by a senior delegation from South Africa’s Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), led by Lieutenant General CS. Mosipi. He expressed gratitude for the delegation’s visit, emphasizing the importance of building a deeper understanding and cooperation between the agencies.

He acknowledged the DPCI’s impressive track record and commitment to combating serious crimes that pose a threat to society. Stressing the complexity of the challenges they face, Chukkol highlighted the need for a holistic and collaborative approach. He emphasized that the EFCC highly values cooperation with law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies in Africa to address the continent’s challenges effectively.

Chukkol also emphasized the significance of open and transparent sharing of intelligence, strategies, and methodologies, as they play a crucial role in strengthening collective efforts and enhancing resilience against evolving criminal tactics.

In response, Lieutenant General Mosipi of the DPCI conveyed the delegation’s purpose of exploring new approaches to tackle economic and financial crimes and related offenses in their society. He called for greater collaboration between both agencies, urging the implementation of the existing law enforcement Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Nigeria and South Africa.

Lieutenant General Mosipi pointed out the DPCI’s focus on serious economic and financial crimes, as well as drug-related offenses, and expressed optimism about finding effective solutions through the collaborative efforts with the EFCC. He hoped that the discussions held during the visit would lead to concrete action plans and strengthen their capacity to combat these crimes effectively.
