The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Navy have reaffirmed their unwavering dedication to combating oil theft. During a courtesy visit to the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship, Beecroft, Apapa, Lagos, K.O. Oguntuga, on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, the Lagos Zonal Commander of EFCC, Michael T. Wetkas, emphasized the visit’s purpose: to strengthen the already established collaboration and partnership between the EFCC and the Navy in the fight against economic and financial crimes.
Wetkas also shared some encouraging statistics during the visit, revealing that the Commission had achieved 37 convictions out of the 54 cases referred to it by the Navy. He further mentioned that the remaining cases were either in court or still under investigation.
In response, Oguntuga assured the Commission of continued cooperation and stressed the importance of collaboration between organizations to effectively close gaps that criminals may exploit. He highlighted that no individual, organization, or nation can tackle these challenges alone, underlining the significance of their joint efforts in combating economic and financial crimes.
The call for improved communication channels to enhance synergy was also echoed during the meeting, as they recognized that stronger collaborative measures could enhance their ability to protect the nation.
In another related event, earlier in the day, Wetkas hosted Officers from Squadron 23, Police Mobile Force, led by ACP I. Daniel. Daniel expressed hope that the existing relationship between the EFCC and the Nigeria Police would be sustained in the battle against corruption and economic and financial crimes in the country. He emphasized the need for a more robust partnership and greater synergy between the two agencies, recognizing that establishing strong relationships is vital in their joint efforts.
Wetkas welcomed the visit and expressed his commitment to building on the existing relationship, acknowledging the crucial role the Nigeria Police Force plays in the EFCC’s history. He expressed gratitude for the assistance received and reiterated their determination to maintain a robust partnership to achieve a Nigeria free of criminal activities.
