In a recent development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed its discontent with a judgment from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, which imposed a N100 million fine against the Commission in favor of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
The ruling, delivered by Justice O.A Adeniyi on Monday, January 8, 2024, deemed the Commission’s detention of Emefiele during the investigation as a violation of his right to liberty, leading to the imposition of the substantial fine.
The EFCC contends that the court’s decision overlooked a crucial aspect—the fact that the former CBN boss was detained based on a valid court order. Consequently, the Commission has announced its intention to appeal the judgment and seek its reversal through the Court of Appeal. The EFCC maintains that the legal foundation for Emefiele’s detention was lawful and aims to present a robust case in defense of its actions during the investigation.
