EFCC urges youths to reject rationalizing criminality

Abdulkarim Chukkol, the Acting Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has urged young people throughout Nigeria to steer clear of cybercrime and refrain from attempting to rationalize criminal behavior.

Chukkol delivered this message on August 16, 2023, during a town hall gathering named “Nzuko Umu Ntorobia,” which translates to “Gathering of the Youth.” The event was organized by the Di Nma Forum, a Non-Governmental Organization, and took place at Oakland Hotels in Ebeano Estate, Ogui, Enugu.

Speaking through the Enugu Zonal Commander of the Commission, ACE1 Aliyu Nuhu Naibi, Chukkol used a vivid analogy: “It’s like choking yourself with a knife and then arguing that since someone else is choking too, you should be left alone. We’ve been communicating with you young people through various awareness platforms like this, but some among you refuse to heed the advice, instead suggesting that we first address political figures.”

While acknowledging that economic pressures, peer influence, and parental expectations can push young individuals toward criminal activities, the head of EFCC emphasized that no justification exists for youth involvement in cybercrime.

In response, Comrade Humphrey Edeh, the Convener of Di Nma Forum, expressed gratitude to the EFCC for the chance to gain insights into the battle against economic and financial crimes. He stated, “I appreciate this significant opportunity to clarify the perspectives of young people regarding cybercrime.”
