EU launches Climate month in Nigeria with focus on green growth ahead of COP29

The European Union (EU) has kicked off its Climate Month in Nigeria, showcasing a series of impactful events aimed at promoting sustainability and collaboration in the lead-up to COP29, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The initiative, themed “Opportunities for Growing Green Together,” highlights the EU’s commitment to advancing climate action and green growth in partnership with Nigeria.

Organized under the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, the events emphasize innovation, sustainable infrastructure, and shared climate responsibility. Key sectors such as energy, agriculture, digitalization, and transport will be in focus, with notable events including the Green Bond Stakeholder Dialogue, Nigeria’s Methane Emissions Reduction Programme, and the launch of the Nigeria Energy Support Programme (NESP) III.

Massimo De Luca, Head of Cooperation for the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized the EU’s dedication to sustainable partnerships, stating, “Our goal is to foster impactful change through collaboration, empowering both Nigeria and the EU to grow green together.”

The EU Climate Month events also include capacity-building programs for Nigeria’s climate negotiators ahead of COP29, as well as discussions on energy transition, carbon pricing, and emission monitoring. The EU is supporting Nigeria’s efforts to reduce methane emissions, particularly in the oil and gas sector, through the Nigeria Methane Emissions Reduction Programme.

This initiative reflects the EU’s broader efforts to boost green investments globally, with the EU Global Green Bonds Initiative expected to generate up to €20 billion for sustainable projects.
