Experts in international diplomacy have endorsed Contemporary World Nigeria magazine as a vital platform for enhancing bilateral relations between Nigeria and China, particularly in the areas of cultural, academic, and strategic cooperation.
The commendation came during a seminar held Tuesday in Abuja, themed “Advancing Knowledge Exchange,” aimed at promoting the publication and its role in deepening Nigeria-China ties. The event was jointly organised by Contemporary World China and Nigeria’s Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR).
Speaking at the seminar, Director General of IPCR, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, described the magazine as a strategic medium for sharing insights on Nigeria-China relations, China-Africa engagements, and broader African development goals.
“We are scaling up the magazine as a platform for knowledge dissemination and production, particularly around innovation, inclusion, and development,” Ochogwu said.
He emphasized the importance of aligning the magazine’s objectives with the development agendas of both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping, especially in the context of infrastructure and economic growth.
“The publication serves as both a mirror and a bridge—reflecting the evolving global landscape through African perspectives and connecting cultures through dialogue and shared development goals,” he added.
Dr. Ochogwu also highlighted that the magazine’s growing relevance aligns with the recent elevation of Nigeria-China relations from a Strategic Partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, following President Tinubu’s 2024 state visit to Beijing.
Since its Nigerian launch in 2022, the magazine has contributed to intellectual and cultural exchanges between Africa and China, providing a platform for collaborative thought leadership.
In a goodwill message, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, represented by Counselor Wang Jun, said the magazine plays an essential role in deepening mutual understanding and facilitating people-to-people interaction.
He described the publication as “a new vision in an era defined by global power competition and unilateralism,” and urged that it be developed into a national core journal on international relations and global affairs.
“The magazine must combine academic authority with strategic insight—analyzing international issues in-depth and sharing informed perspectives on global politics, economics, and culture,” the envoy said.
Guest speaker, Mr. Charles Onunaiju, praised the magazine’s potential to strengthen China-Africa relations, urging Nigerians to use it to better understand China’s development journey and apply relevant lessons to national growth strategies.
“The magazine offers Africans a tool to broaden their strategic thinking and explore how China’s transformation was achieved through intellect and planning,” he stated.
Participants at the seminar agreed that Contemporary World Nigeria is not only fostering dialogue but also shaping the narrative of Nigeria-China cooperation in a multipolar world.
