The Federal Government has declared Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the decision while congratulating Muslim faithful nationwide on the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Federal Government, the minister urged Muslims to sustain the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice exemplified during Ramadan.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of extending these values beyond the fasting period, noting that they are essential to fostering national harmony and social cohesion.
He also called on all Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to use the festive period to offer prayers for peace, unity, and continued progress in the country, stressing that collective responsibility remains vital to national stability.
The minister further advised citizens to celebrate responsibly and show compassion to the less privileged, in line with the spirit of the season.
The declaration, according to the government, reflects its commitment to promoting unity and peaceful coexistence as Muslims across the country prepare to observe one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar.
