FG unveils initiative to formalize one million businesses at discounted rates

In a landmark move aimed at bolstering the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) sector in Nigeria, the federal government has announced plans to formalize one million businesses across the country, offering them a discounted registration rate.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of The Vice President) Stanley Nkwocha reported that the revelation came from Vice President Kashim Shettima during the launch of the Expanded National MSME Clinic in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State. The event marked the inaugural stop on a nationwide tour designed to empower small and medium-sized businesses by dismantling barriers and providing essential resources.

The MSME Clinic, the first of its kind under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeks to create an enabling environment for MSMEs. The clinic’s debut in Benue sets the stage for a strategic rollout across Ebonyi, Ogun, Delta, Kaduna, Borno, Katsina States, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the first half of 2024. The initiative will culminate in the National MSME Awards, scheduled to coincide with World MSME Day on June 27, 2024, in Abuja.

Vice President Shettima, addressing a large gathering of entrepreneurs and stakeholders at the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) square in Makurdi, emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a thriving MSME ecosystem. He acknowledged the pivotal role MSMEs play in job creation and economic development, assuring them of unwavering government support.

Senator Shettima highlighted the proactive measures already in place, including a N75 billion 9% single-digit loan from the Bank of Industry (BOI) and a discounted N50 billion funds from Access Bank, with potential increases based on loan performance. He reiterated President Tinubu’s dedication to resolving MSME challenges, emphasizing the administration’s persistence in addressing bottlenecks affecting the sector.

The Vice President commended Benue State’s industrious spirit and entrepreneurial drive, describing it as a “beacon of inspiration” for the entire nation. He announced President Tinubu’s plans to establish a world-class fashion hub in Makurdi within 90 days, dedicated to supporting the state’s thriving tailoring cluster.

In his address, Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia declared Benue State open for business, underscoring the state’s commitment to supporting and empowering MSMEs as a key driver of economic growth. The Governor celebrated the diverse range of thriving MSMEs in Benue, citing examples such as Andor Global Foods, innovative motorcycle builders, and traditional attire weavers.

Governor Alia acknowledged the challenges faced by MSMEs, including insecurity, regulatory hurdles, and access to finance, assuring participants that the state government is actively addressing these issues.

The launch event was attended by various dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Barr. Sam Ode, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly Mr. Aondona Dajoh, Chief Judge of Benue State Justice Maurice Ikpambese, and other members of the National and State Assemblies.

The Vice President was accompanied by heads of key agencies, including SMEDAN, NEPC, BOA, BOI, NEXIM, NAFDAC, SON, FIRS, and others, promising immediate access to working capital, formalization assistance, and export guidance.

VP Visits IDP Camp, Promises Continued Humanitarian Aid and Skills Development

In a demonstration of the government’s commitment to humanitarian efforts, Vice President Shettima visited the Ichwa Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Makurdi. He offered solace and support to those displaced by conflict, engaging with families to understand their stories of loss and displacement.

Vice President Shettima assured the displaced families of President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to their well-being. He pledged continued humanitarian aid and explored avenues for skills development and livelihood opportunities within the camp, promising to expedite the process of safe resettlement.
