The Bauchi State Police Command has announced the death of five officers and injuries to two others following an ambush by suspected bandits in Sabon Sara village, Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the State Police Public Relations Officer CSP Ahmed Muhammed Wakil described the incident as “unfortunate and tragic,” noting that the officers were attacked on November 22 while conducting an intelligence-led visibility patrol aimed at preventing and managing farmer–herder conflicts in the area. The patrol team comprised personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), 10 PMF Bauchi, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU), and the State Intelligence Department (SID).
The attack, reportedly carried out by unidentified Fulani youths, led to a fierce gun battle during which a number of the assailants were neutralised. Despite this, the Command confirmed the loss of the following personnel: DSP Ahmad Muhammad (SID), ASP Mustapha Muhammad (10 PMF), Inspector Amarhel Yunusa (10 PMF), Inspector Idris Ahmed (10 PMF), and Corporal Isah Muazu (AKU).
Two other officers — Inspector Isah Musa and Inspector Yusuf Gambo, both of the SID — sustained varying degrees of injuries and were evacuated to the General Hospital in Darazo after reinforcements led by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Auwalu Ilu, arrived at the scene.
Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, later conducted an on-the-spot assessment and expressed condolences to the families of the fallen officers. He assured the public that an intensive operation is underway to track down and apprehend the attackers.
The Command reiterated its determination to confront criminal elements across the state, vowing to remain “fierce, tireless, and relentless” in fulfilling its mandate to protect lives and property.
