As year-end travel intensifies, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has heightened its advocacy efforts, with Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed urging passengers to prioritize safety by avoiding vehicles operated by reckless or impaired drivers.
According to Assistant Corps Marshal Corps Public Education Officer Federal Road Safety Corps Headquarters, Abuja Olusegun Ogungbemide, this warning follows two recent crashes: one on December 26, 2024, in Jebba, Kwara State, and another on December 28, 2024, on the Owo-Ikare route before Ose Bridge. According to the Corps Marshal, both incidents were preventable and linked to driver negligence and a lack of passenger intervention.
To prevent similar occurrences, passengers are advised to assess their drivers for signs of recklessness or intoxication before and during their trips. Additionally, they should ensure vehicles meet basic safety standards, including functional brakes, tires, and lights, and report unsafe behavior to the FRSC or other security agencies.
While extending condolences to the victims and their families, the Corps Marshal emphasized the shared responsibility of ensuring road safety. He encouraged commuters to adopt proactive measures to minimize risks, complementing the FRSC’s ongoing safety interventions.
