Troops neutralize ESN militants, recover arms in Imo

Troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade neutralized elements of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during operations in Osina, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, on Friday, December 27, 2024.

Responding to a distress call regarding an IPOB/ESN attack on Osina Community, the troops engaged the militants in a fierce firefight, forcing them to retreat. Tragically, two security agents were killed, and one remains missing. The militants also seized an AK-47 rifle and a tear gas launcher belonging to the slain personnel.

Pursuing the fleeing attackers, the troops made contact with the militants again at Nkwachi Community. In the ensuing clash, one militant was neutralized, and an AK-47 rifle with a loaded magazine was recovered. The pursuit continued into Umalouma Forest, where a third engagement resulted in the militants abandoning their weapons due to the troops’ superior firepower.

In total, the operation led to the recovery of six AK-47 rifles, one Fabrique Nationale rifle, two magazines, and a tear gas launcher.

The military has vowed to sustain operations to eliminate the remnants of IPOB/ESN militants, urging them to surrender or face severe consequences. Peace-loving residents of Imo State are encouraged to provide timely intelligence on the movements and hideouts of criminal elements to assist in ongoing efforts to restore peace.

Captain Joseph Baba Akubo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 34 Artillery Brigade, assured the public of the military’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure Yuletide season for all residents.
