The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has cautioned motorists against excessive speeding, drunk driving and reckless behaviour during Valentine’s Day celebrations.
In a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal said all operational and public enlightenment strategies had been activated to ensure the safety of road users throughout the celebration period.
He directed Commanding Officers nationwide to intensify efforts through the massive deployment of personnel for enhanced visibility, effective traffic control and strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
The Corps Marshal further ordered that operatives deployed for the exercise make full use of breathalysers and radar guns to detect and apprehend suspected drunk drivers and speed violators, stressing that such measures are necessary to prevent avoidable crashes, fatalities and property damage.
While acknowledging the significance of Valentine’s Day as a global celebration of love and compassion in memory of Saint Valentine, Mohammed urged motorists to demonstrate responsibility by complying fully with traffic laws.
“Motorists who choose to celebrate must do so responsibly. The Corps will not hesitate to sanction any driver found violating established traffic regulations,” he warned.
He also encouraged road users to utilise the FRSC’s 122 toll-free emergency line to report crashes, obstructions or incidents of reckless driving for prompt intervention.
The Corps Marshal called on the public to cooperate with FRSC personnel deployed across the country, emphasising that their presence is solely to safeguard lives and property.
He further appealed to parents and guardians to counsel their wards to exercise restraint and good conduct during the festivities, noting that youths are particularly vulnerable during such celebratory periods.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe and incident-free Valentine’s Day for all road users.
