The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service, has contained a fire that engulfed a cooking gas plant and adjoining properties at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, Abuja.
In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, Abuja SP Josephine Adeh said the incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, following a distress call from a resident reporting the fire outbreak.
The Police said a team from the Kubwa Police Division was immediately deployed to the scene, where officers met a raging inferno that had spread to nearby shops and other properties.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire was triggered when the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep allegedly drove against traffic and lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the cooking gas plant.
The impact reportedly caused an explosion that ignited the gas facility and nearby properties.
The driver and occupants of the vehicle were said to have fled the scene immediately after the crash.
The Police Command said it had established the identity of the driver and launched a manhunt to apprehend him.
The Federal Fire Service, which was contacted by the Police, responded to the scene and worked with officers to contain the inferno.
No casualty was recorded in the incident, while the Police said an assessment of the value of property destroyed in the fire was still ongoing.
The FCT Police Command assured residents that normalcy had been restored in the area, urging them to return to their lawful businesses.
