Major General Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, has urged troops to continue creating an enabling environment for sustained oil production in the Niger Delta Region (NDR).
According to Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations Lieut. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the GOC delivered this message during the West African Social Activities (WASA) celebration for the year 2024, held on January 18, 2025, at the 29 Battalion Parade Ground, Port Harcourt Barracks.
In his address, Major General Abdussalam highlighted the critical role of the troops in supporting the Federal Government’s oil production targets for 2025 and beyond. He encouraged the soldiers to redouble their efforts to ensure increased oil output, expressing gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for his strategic leadership and guidance in repositioning the Nigerian Army.
WASA, a key event in the Nigerian Army’s customs and traditions, aims to strengthen social bonds among officers, soldiers, and their families through cultural displays, musical performances, and other regimental activities. Major General Abdussalam emphasized the significance of the event in fostering community spirit and commemorating the sacrifices of soldiers who died in service.
Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, represented by the State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Israel Ngbuelo Lebura, lauded the collaborative relationship between the military and civilian authorities. He praised the Nigerian Army’s commitment to addressing security challenges in the NDR and commended their fight against oil theft.
The event featured various cultural displays, a tug of war, award presentations, and a ceremonial bonfire, culminating in the traditional “beating of retreat” ceremony.
