Troops deactivate 23 illegal refineries, arrest IPOB members in Niger Delta

In a continued effort to combat economic sabotage and crime, troops of the 6 Division have recorded significant successes across the Niger Delta Region (NDR).

Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations Lieut. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma said from January 12 to 19, 2025, operations led to the deactivation of 23 illegal artisanal refineries, the destruction of 14 boats, and the arrest of 25 oil thieves, including four suspected members of the proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB). Over 45,000 litres of stolen products were recovered.

Rivers State: In Obia-Akpor Local Government Area, a truck carrying over 15,000 litres of stolen products was seized on the Eastwest road near Eneka. Around Karakarma in Degema LGA, seven illegal refining sites were deactivated, and four fibre boats, along with over 12,000 litres of stolen products, were impounded. Similar operations in Bille, also in Degema LGA, saw the deactivation of two illegal refining sites and the recovery of over 2,400 litres of stolen products.

Imo Riverside: Troops destroyed 13 illegal refining sites, 25 drum pots, 24 receivers, and six metal containers, recovering more than 7,000 litres of stolen products. Additional equipment, including empty gallons, hollow pipes, motorcycles, and a boat, was also confiscated.

Delta State: In a sting operation at Powerline Bonsac in Oshimili LGA, four suspected IPOB members were arrested, and several items were recovered. Along the Yokri River in Burutu LGA, five dugout pits with an unquantified quantity of stolen products were destroyed. Troops also intercepted motorcycles transporting stolen products at Abor Community junction to Kwale in Ndokwa West LGA.

Bayelsa State: On the Okarki to Otuasega road in Ogbia LGA, two Toyota Avalon cars loaded with illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) were intercepted. The vehicles and products were handled according to the operational mandate.

Akwa Ibom State: Troops maintained an operational posture to deter criminal activities.

Major General Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding 6 Division, commended the troops for their resilience and urged them to sustain the operational momentum. He emphasized the importance of denying criminal elements, especially IPOB members, any stronghold in the NDR.
