The House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services has raised serious concerns over the escalating Mpox epidemic in Nigeria, as new cases surge across multiple states.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recently reported a significant uptick in Mpox infections, prompting an urgent call for enhanced surveillance, rapid case detection, and immediate isolation of affected individuals. The NCDC has urged the public to adhere to preventive measures, including regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with infected persons, and seeking medical attention at the first sign of symptoms.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also flagged the situation as a potential public health emergency of international concern, calling for increased global support to bolster Nigeria’s response efforts. This includes the distribution of vaccines, public health education, and international cooperation.
According to House of Representatives Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr, the House Committee on Healthcare Services, led by Rep. Dennis Idahosa (APC, Edo), has intensified its oversight and is collaborating closely with health agencies and international partners to ensure a coordinated and effective response. “The rising cases of Mpox in our country are a serious threat to public health. We are fully committed to working with the NCDC, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and international partners to curb this epidemic. The safety and well-being of Nigerians is our top priority,” said Rep. Idahosa.
NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, confirmed that the Centre is actively conducting contact tracing and monitoring to prevent further spread, with all major ports of entry on high alert. Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, has assured the public of robust government action, including mandatory health declarations for travelers entering the country.
The House of Representatives, in line with its Legislative Agenda on Social Sector Reform and Development, will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with relevant authorities to manage the outbreak effectively.
