IGP bans unauthorised social media use by police officers

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to refrain from engaging in unauthorised social media activities capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism, and public image of the Force.

According to Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, the directive follows growing concerns over the increasing trend of police officers creating and publishing videos, conducting live social media sessions, and engaging in other online activities while in uniform or in circumstances that identify them as members of the Force without official approval.

According to a statement issued by the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP stressed that although social media remains an important tool for communication and public engagement, its use by serving officers must strictly comply with existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.

He noted that officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content while in police uniform, publicly commenting on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police personnel for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes.

To ensure full compliance, Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other supervisory officers have been directed to immediately sensitise personnel under their command and enforce strict adherence to the directive.

The IGP further warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take appropriate action against violations occurring within their areas of responsibility.

In addition, the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) have been mandated to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers whose online activities fall short of the professional standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.

The police leadership reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, while assuring Nigerians of its continued dedication to maintaining public trust and safeguarding the integrity of the institution.
