IGP implements stringent security measures for 2024 elections across 26 states

In preparation for the upcoming run-off and bye-elections scheduled to occur across 26 states on Saturday, February 3, 2024, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a directive for a comprehensive security plan.

In a statement Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said this plan includes the restriction of vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other transportation modes from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day in the affected states, excluding essential services like INEC officials, electoral observers, accredited media, ambulances, firefighters, and others.

Adejobi said the affected states encompass Ebonyi, Yobe, Kebbi, Lagos, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, Borno, Kaduna, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Jigawa, Katsina, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

He said in a bid to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, the IGP has also implemented a ban on all security aides to VIPs and escorts from accompanying their principals and politicians to polling booths and collation centers. Furthermore, state-established and owned security outfits, quasi-security units, and privately owned guard and security outfits are prohibited from participating in election security management.

Adejobi said these measures aim to prevent undue interference or intimidation during the elections, with the IGP emphasizing their importance in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring equal participation for all citizens in the affected states.

IGP Egbetokun calls on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to adhere to electoral laws, warning that any attempt to disrupt the process will face legal consequences. He assures citizens of the Force’s commitment to fostering a secure and democratic society.
