IGP inaugurates 1st NPF open national mixed martial arts championship in Abuja

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has officially inaugurated the groundbreaking 1st NPF Open National Mixed Martial Arts Championship. The championship is scheduled to take place on the 2nd and 3rd of December 2023 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Addressing the audience during the inauguration on Saturday, December 2, 2023, the IGP emphasized the significance of this championship in not only enhancing policing services but also contributing to the broader development of sports in Nigeria. The event is strategically poised to foster collaboration and mutual respect among participating law enforcement agencies, showcasing their commitment to community policing.

As part of the meticulous preparation for this historic championship, the Nigerian Police Force conducted a comprehensive 2-day seminar titled “Sensitization on the Rules and Regulations of Mixed Martial Arts.” This seminar brought together athletes and officials from the Police, Para-military, and other law enforcement agencies, along with representatives from the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Development.

The IGP urged all participating athletes and agencies to demonstrate their best performances while strictly adhering to the rules and maintaining the spirit of sportsmanship. The competition will feature various categories, including the Beginners Mixed Martial Arts events, highlighting a combination of grappling, striking, and ground fighting.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, mnipr, mipra, fCAI, the Force Public Relations Officer, reiterated the commitment of the Force to promoting sports and fostering positive interactions among law enforcement agencies. The championship is expected to serve as a platform for building camaraderie and professional relationships among the participants.

The 1st NPF Open National Mixed Martial Arts Championship is poised to be a landmark event, marking a significant step in the integration of sports and law enforcement in Nigeria. The Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja will witness the convergence of top athletes from various agencies, showcasing their skills and dedication to both their profession and the spirit of sportsmanship.
