In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Nigerian Military Wrestlers achieved outstanding success at the 36th World Military Wrestling Championship held in Baku on Friday, 1st December, 2023, securing both gold and silver medals in the prestigious tournament.
According to Director, Defence Information Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the highlight of the historic triumph was the gold medal secured by Corporal Hannah Reuben, a female wrestler who dominated her Italian counterpart in the 68-kilogram weight category of women’s freestyle wrestling. This significant feat marks the first time the Armed Forces of Nigeria has clinched a gold medal since participating in the CISM World Wrestling Championship, showcasing the team’s exceptional prowess on the global stage.
The momentous occasion was witnessed by esteemed dignitaries, including the Vice President of the International Military Sports Council (CISM), Mr. Dirk Shwede, who presented the gold medal to Corporal Reuben in recognition of her outstanding performance.
Adding to the glory, Lance Corporal Ojolaide Esther contributed to the team’s success by securing a silver medal in the 72-kilogram weight category earlier in the event. The collective achievements of the Nigerian military wrestling team have not only set a record but have also garnered widespread acclaim, further establishing their presence as formidable contenders in the international wrestling arena.
Present at the event were Major General Emmanuel Onumajuru, Chief of Defence Training and Operations, representing the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, and Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Timothy Marquis, Director of Sports, Defence Headquarters. Both senior officers emphasized the crucial role played by General CG Musa OFR in the team’s success, acknowledging his unwavering support as instrumental to the historic victory.
