Ikpeazu reaffirms Nigeria-Spain ties at 66

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with the Kingdom of Spain, particularly in trade, investment, education, technology, infrastructure and renewable energy.

Ikpeazu made the commitment in Madrid while addressing Nigerians and other guests at an event commemorating Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The ambassador described the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey since independence in 1960 and to renew the country’s commitment to freedom, unity, progress and national development.

He congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians, particularly members of the Nigerian community in Spain, on the occasion, while paying tribute to the nationalists and patriots whose courage and sacrifices contributed to the attainment of independence.

According to him, nation-building remains a continuous process requiring resilience, innovation and collective responsibility.

Ikpeazu noted that Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous country and one of its largest economies, possesses enormous human and natural resources, cultural diversity and a vibrant youthful population.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s contribution to regional peace, security and development, as well as the country’s democratic institutions and growing opportunities across various sectors.

The ambassador said the anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the “strong and growing bonds of friendship” between Nigeria and Spain, describing the bilateral relationship as one characterised by mutual respect, constructive dialogue and expanding cooperation.

He noted that Spanish companies, including GB Foods, continue to explore opportunities in Nigeria, while Nigerians living in Spain contribute significantly to the country’s social and economic development.

Ikpeazu said Nigeria was particularly interested in deepening cooperation with Spain in renewable energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology and the creative industries.

He described the Nigerian community in Spain, comprising students, professionals and entrepreneurs, as important bridges between both countries.

“Your hard work, integrity, and achievements enhance the image of our nation and strengthen the bridges between our two countries,” he told the community, urging Nigerians in Spain to remain united, law-abiding and committed to the values of enterprise, innovation and resilience.

On Nigeria’s economic outlook, the ambassador said the Federal Government was pursuing reforms focused on economic diversification, improved governance and inclusive growth.

He acknowledged the challenges facing the economy but said progress was being made, stressing that the government remained committed to harnessing the energy of Nigerian youths, the creativity of its citizens and the strength of the country’s diversity to build a more prosperous and secure future.

Ikpeazu also assured potential investors of Nigeria’s readiness to create opportunities for investment and facilitate business-to-business partnerships.

He said Spain’s support and partnership would remain important as Nigeria pursued its development objectives.

“As we raise a toast to Nigeria at 66, let us renew our pledge to work together for a nation that is peaceful, prosperous, and respected in the comity of nations,” the ambassador said.

He concluded by wishing both Nigeria and Spain continued progress, declaring: “Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Long live the Kingdom of Spain.”
