INEC debunks fake governorship candidates’ notice on six states

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as fake a publication circulating online that purports to be a special announcement by the Commission on governorship candidates in six states.

The Commission, in a public notice, said the fraudulent publication, which mentions Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano states, did not originate from INEC.

It urged Nigerians to disregard the notice and refrain from sharing it, warning that the circulation of unverified electoral information could mislead the public.

INEC clarified that claims suggesting it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states were false.

The electoral body advised members of the public to verify all election-related information through its official communication channels, including its website, www.inecnigeria.org, and news portal, www.inecnews.com.

It also identified its verified social media platforms as INEC Nigeria on Facebook and @inecnigeria on X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram.

For further enquiries and clarification, the Commission provided its contact channels, including the INEC Call Centre on 0700-2255-4632, short code 4632, and telephone numbers 090844444333 and 09050858629. Members of the public can also reach the Commission via iccc@inec.gov.ng.

INEC reiterated its commitment to providing accurate and credible electoral information, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant against fraudulent publications and rely exclusively on its verified communication platforms for official announcements.

The warning comes amid the growing importance of information verification in protecting public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process and preventing the spread of misleading claims about election administration.
